| Featured Artist: Jo Rivers My Background: well I'm a graduate of the Rhode Island School
of Design in 1992. Studied illustration and print making. Of course
I never would have gone to art school had it not been for my limited
junior college art experience or my ever present love for comic
books and cartoons. I also really dig those German expressionist
propaganda posters. My Technique: For the most part I work exclusively with scratch
board as a starting point. Both the inked and un-inked variety.
That way I can produce both the Kathe Kollwitz/ Fritz Eichenberg
gritty type stuff as well as the Chuck Jones/ Fritz Frilling(
think early Warner Brothers) exaggerated animated looking work
as well. My Involvement in the Guild: I'm a member of the Lunch Committee...
that high profile arm of the organization that provides a forum
for all involved to have contact on a
consistent basis. It actually a lot o' fun getting together with
peers in the industry with such broad work experience. It a excellent
way to get perspective about the goings on in the Graphic Arts
community My Favorite Client story: I think my favorite client story is
a cover illustration I did for the Foreign Service Journal while
living in Washington D.C. It was a profile puff piece about former
ambassador, CIA director Vice President, and President George
Herbert Walker Bush. I submitted the art and at first the client
loved it...a few days later they hated it and asked that I redo
it (paid of course) I resubmitted a digital collage piece, hardly
my technique and they loved that !!! I got a phone call from them
a few weeks after the issue hit the newsstands saying that then
President Bush (1993??) was interested in getting a copy of the
art! I was... um honored..? but the catch was the President's
folks wanted me to donate the work to his library....DONATE?? Anything else? Illustration is all about love for drawing. Don't
do it if you're in it strictly for the money...It can suck! Do
it so you can find time to work on your own work! Or better yet
so you can just keep drawing! All artwork © 2002 Jo Rivers. Not to be used without permission.
