Featured Artist: Joe VanDerBos Joe VanDerBos has worked with corporate, advertising and editorial
clients for over 15 years. He provides illustration, icons, logo
development, and custom typography to clients around the world,
with an emphasis on technology, financial services, travel and
information industries.
Joe holds a BFA in Graphic Design from Western Michigan University,
and worked as graphic designer in Austin and Chicago before transitioning
to illustration--and California--full time in 1992. He combines
digital and hand-drawn elements in a style that's lighthearted,
upbeat, clean, direct, and sometimes whimsical. The same description
might apply to his successful Retrofit typeface.
He says "My natural tendency to never do the same thing the
same way twice has worked against developing a monotonous look.
It's allowed me to serve a variety of clients while I continue
to stretch - thanks to their trust in me. Each solution is unique,
but I hope recognizable."
Joe served the Northern CA Chapter as it's first Vice-President,
and acting President before moving on the the National Strategic
Planning Committee, Executive Committee and then the National
Secretary/Treasurer role. He also served on the and the first
Peep Show organizing team. He currently enjoys his role as semi-retired
unofficial adviser and occasional crank. He says "Being involved
in the Guild leadership has been a wonderful way to get perspective,
encouragement and information in what can be an isolating worklife".
He recommends anyone take the next step up the volunteer ladder.
His client list includes VISA, Continental Airlines, Infoworld,
Consumer's Digest, Progress Software, The Atlantic Monthly, Inc.
Magazine, TWA, Chronicle Books, Ameritech and many more. He enjoys
organic gardening and resides with his partner David in Sonoma
County, north of San Francisco. All artwork © 2002 Joe VanDerBos. Not to be used without
