NORCALGUILDTALK LISTSERV POLICY STATEMENT

Topic Definition: Acceptable topics for discussion on this list are issues pertaining to the graphic arts industry and issues pertaining to the Northern California Chapter of the Graphic Artists Guild.

Terms of Use

•The listserv is open to Guild members and non-members alike.

•Correspondence is monitored by a moderator to ensure proper use of the listserv.

•Be considerate of the Guild audience. Your message must be appropriate for this listserv. Off-topic posts will be considered spam.

•"Netiquette" must always be observed. (See "Basic Netiquette" below.)

NorCalGuildTalk is not a forum for arguments or off-topic discussions.

•Take arguments and personal discussion to private exchange. Anyone who attacks another member on the list will be removed from the list.

•The moderator of the list makes final decisions regarding whether or not an individual is to be removed from the list.

•Do not reply to digest messages with "List #123" in the subject line. Modify the subject line to reflect the content of your message.

•Do not reply to digest messages with the entire digest quoted. Quote only the part necessary to make your point.

•Do not post attachments. If your message is too large for a simple text e-mail, offer it to members as a private mailing or via http link.

•It is undesirable to post html code. It doubles the message size and does not display properly in many cases.

•Flaming, spamming and other inconsiderate behavior will not be tolerated. Inconsiderate participants will be removed from the listserv.

•Sign your name at the end of your message. Few will know your identity if you sign only a clever login name, e.g. artistecommerciale@home.com.

•Use of the list for illegal activities is strictly prohibited. Posting of material that may be considered sexist, racist, hateful, pornographic, etc., is forbidden.

•Send all administrative inquiries/requests (i.e. subscription status, delivery issues, etc.) to the moderator at norcalguildtalk-owner@yahoogroups.com

•Do not post subscription change requests, etc. to the list. See below for subscription change information.

If you have questions regarding the listserv and/or the proper use of the NorCalGuildTalklistserv, please contact Dianna Jacobsen. Issues not addressed here will be taken under consideration by the NorCal Communications Committee.

By subscribing to thelistserv you are confirming that you have read and agree to the terms of the NorCalGuildTalk Listserv Policy.

Basic Netiquette

(This policy is not the final word on cyberspace etiquette. In addition to the following, we suggest reading: http://www.albion.com/netiquette/corerules.html

•Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

•Personal conversations or exchanges are for private e-mails.

•People have varying opinions and tolerance must be practiced by all.

•Be patient with newcomers. They may lack knowledge or ability in regard to the internet.

•Remember, not all participants are native speakers of English.

•Be forgiving of unintentional misunderstandings or discourtesies.

•Carefully read all messages to be sure you fully understand them.

•Re-read what you are about to send. Be sure your message cannot be easily misconstrued.

•When using humor or sarcasm, be sure it's evident. The absence of expressions common in face-to-face communication can lead to potential misunderstandings. Use smiley faces, i.e., :), to help indicate your message is meant as humor or sarcasm.

•Don't hide behind the anonymity of the internet to say rude or insulting things that you wouldn't say in person.

•Don't forward private messages to the list without permission.

•Use concise subject lines that clearly define the contents of the message.

•Second subjects within a message are often overlooked. Consider writing a message on a new topic rather than including it in the first message.

•If significant time has elapsed between the original message and your reply, your recipient may not understand a reply that only says, "Yes" or "Friday morning." Quote whatever portions of the original message that will make your reply sensible.

•Avoid using all UPPERCASE characters in your message. They are less readable and considered the e-mail equivalent of shouting.

•Avoid cluttering your messages with excessive emphasis (such as stars, arrows, etc.) that make the message hard to follow.

•Flaming, spamming and other inconsiderate behavior will not be tolerated. Flaming is defined as: Using hostile, inappropriate, demeaning or degrading language; messages that show disrespect or disregard for the feelings or positions (ie., use "I disagree with your statement...", rather than "you're wrong", or "I feel offended by what I'm hearing", rather than "you're rude to say that". Stay civil, even when you feel attacked. You'll be judged by others for what you say, not what others say to you.
